As I mentioned in one of my first posts on Take a Vication, my family loves traveling to Cabo San Lucas between November and February.
While we primarily stay in time shares with large groups of people, Kevin and I opted to extend our stay this year for two nights at Acre Baja, a 25-acre farm and boutique resort, which boasts 12 treehouses in addition to an award-winning bar and restaurant.
Our stay at Acre included many incredible meals at the onsite restaurant, a complimentary yoga class within the property’s mango grove and relaxing by the stunning pool with custom, refreshing cocktails.
stay
We’ve been to the resort a few times for mezcal tastings, so when we arrived for check-in we couldn’t wait to settle in and not have to leave for a couple days. (Just look how happy we are in this picture.) While we shared our check-in information (via paper and clipboard), the bartender whipped up a couple complimentary margaritas to enjoy before our tour of the grounds.
The Acre resort boasts a restaurant, cocktail bar, private eating areas and a pool, in addition to lots of animals, including peacocks, donkeys, one well-known on Instagram as Burrito, and rescued puppies.
The treehouses are not only unique, but extremely well done from a décor perspective. Definitely brought some inspiration home to our new place and we even got some ideas from the bar.
Our room had a large queen bed, small bathroom, outdoor shower, plenty of storage, a patio area with furniture and a stocked cooler of beverages including coconut water, beers and wine for a small fee.
Since you’re not near the beach, instead of waking up to waves crashing, we woke up to the sound of roosters crowing and birds chirping. It was insanely relaxing and we woke up early both mornings to enjoy everything the place had to offer.
On the first morning, we joined the complimentary yoga class, which ended up being a private class for the both of us. We had brought our own mats, but they provide mats if you haven’t. It was a relaxing class, but the surroundings made it such a unique experience. Every inch of this place is photo-ready. Not surprising, where we had the yoga class is where they host wedding receptions, with string lights, beautiful custom tile and mango trees.
Both days, we spent the majority of our time lounging at the pool. If I had to think of my dream pool, this place would be it. Over two days, only three other people were lounging at the pool during the day as it’s only available for hotel guests and it has its own full bar.
The service here is also unmatched. Since there are only 12 treehouses, everyone is treated like a VIP, with the employees constantly asking how your stay is going, what they can do to make it better, etc. The pool bartender would even bring us water, refill it when it was low and replace it when it was getting warm, which we thought was a nice touch.
eat
While our room was being prepared on the first afternoon, we grabbed a light lunch in the restaurant. The fish tacos were the best I’ve ever had and worth the trip out to Acre for a meal if you can swing it. I’ll be going back just for these soon.
Night one, we were feeling adventurous and opted for the 7-course chef’s tasting menu. This choice included tasting 10 dishes/sides from the menu, and we even got to customize our main entrée and I mentioned the agnolotti from the menu looked incredible. Here’s what we tried:
[ An amuse bouche tuna ceviche tostada; Gazpacho with jicama and peanuts; Aguachile ceviche with shrimp, olives, avocado, jalapenos and tostadas; Beets three ways—fried, roasted and pickled; Sweet corn agnolotti with lobster and peas; Cheddar biscuits; Grilled octopus with pork belly; Tuna tataki; Lamb with cauliflower mash; Mojito and pineapple sorbet ]We were only planning to dine at the restaurant for one dinner, but went back the second night to have full-sized portions of the agnolotti and the tuna tataki—they were that good.
Lastly, our stay included free breakfast. Normally I’m heavily against free breakfast at hotels and like to venture out, but this one is not your typical hotel breakfast. You have the option of anything on their breakfast/brunch menu open to the public. Both mornings we had the omelet and breakfast croissant sandwich with potatoes, in addition to sharing the fruit bowl and banana split—both the best combination of fruit, honey, granola and yogurt that I’ve been trying to imitate since coming home.
drink
During our stay, we probably tried every drink on the menu…and there are a lot. They’ve re-done the menu, but my favorite was so refreshing, with mezcal, reposado tequila, pineapple, lime, passionfruit, verbena honey and angostura bitters. We had a couple other favorites from the menu, but the bartender at the pool bar whipped us up a custom cocktail after we requested something fruity and tart (she chose passion fruit) with mezcal. It was delicious, refreshing and the perfect poolside cocktail.
They also host mezcal tastings in a small room off of the main restaurant. You’ll most likely have to request one, and it’s worth the trip out there. They make their own mezcal, in small batches, and the bottles are beautiful. We always keep one stocked on our bar cart, and while they’re meant to be sipping mezcals, I’ll sometimes whip up a margarita with it.
tl;dr
If you’re looking for an unexpected Cabo experience, stay at Acre Baja. Take advantage of the free breakfast (the fruit especially), meals at the restaurant, the pool and the mezcal tasting.
